Gear position and control sensors

Description

Virtually every racecar uses a sequential shift rather than the 'H' pattern gearbox. The reason being that sequential shift is quicker and more consistent. The selector drum is rotated manually or by an electro-hydraulic actuator. In the electro-hydraulic case, the driver operates the gearshift mechanism from the steering wheel by depressing gear change buttons. Sequential gearboxes have a gear position sensor fitted to measure the position of the selector drum. In high-end professional motorsport, seamless shift gearboxes require a gear position sensor with dual signal outputs for control signal redundancy. The selector drum sensor operates in a harsh environment and at high temperatures and would have almost 360° of measurement angle. Active Sensors offer a number of 'motorsport ready' sensor solutions for gear position systems.

For bespoke applications we offer a comprehensive design, manufacture and speedy delivery service to satisfy the fast paced engineering developments associated with international motorsport.

Rotary potentiometers

RP rotary potentiometers are designed for the most demanding control and measurement systems. Used extensively in motorsport for throttle and gearbox control, steering angle measurement and the monitoring systems of the chassis. The RP is available with a choice of electrical angles and mounting options.

Rotary Hall-Effect sensors

RH long life rotary position sensors are available with single, or dual outputs and up to 360° of electrical angle. Output options are analogue 0-5V. They have a 12-bit resolution (0.08°) over the measuring angle and an impressive update time of <2mS, making them ideal for dynamic control and measurement systems.

Linear Hall-Effect sensors

Hall Effect linear sensors are designed to provide cost effective position measurement utilising proven contactless Hall Effect technology. They operate from a 5Vdc or 8-30Vdc supply and have an output option of 0.5V to 4.5V DC.
