Accurate brake disc wear monitoring in motorsport applications

15th January 2009

A major manufacturer of brake calliper systems approached Active Sensors to design and manufacture accurate, high temperatureLVDT sensors with the most compact body size possible to measure brake disc wear for Formula One racing cars. This was achieved utilising the latest copper wire ‘layered’ winding techniques coupled with the correct choice of coil encapsulation compounds to survive an environment suffering severe vibration and temperatures in excess of 400°C. Additionally, an accuracy of 0.5% or better would be required to accurately monitor calliper movement which allows engineers to evaluate disc wear, which is mission critical to car performance in hard braking zones at the end of race track straights. The success of this project, and many projects like it make Active Sensors the first choice for engineers when specifying sensors for Industrial, Automotive and Aerospace control and measurement systems.
